What a list! So many people responded, both on- and off-list, to my question 
about carving tools for newbies that I can't say enough to thank you all.

I was glad for information on specific brands and suppliers. And even though I 
winced at the costs some of you mentioned (!), several people also suggested 
ways to get started that would let me build up gradually.

A couple listers also added advice on classes, techniques, personal assistance 
-- and eBay as a place to watch for good tools at budget prices.

A newbie couldn't possibly ask for more.
