i'm not up to the 2 that have already answered this question but I am in agreement with them.
But for beginners I would sugest tring some wall placks
I did some woodpeckers on the side of a tree last year & it takes dark color & makes it look like a hard wood.
Just do part of the tree with the bird on the side of it several inches 7 x 2 or something like that
works very fast.

I'm located right here in the heart of redwood country on the north coast of California. I, like Joe, have used it for signs but, for "in the round" I wouldn't go as high as 5 on a scale of 1 - 10. More like 2 1/2 or 3. In order to get good, clean cuts, your tools have to be kept very sharp. That may be a little difficult for beginners but, on the other hand, it might be a good lesson for them and a real incentive for sharpening and honing.

Hello All
My club has just been given a nice quantity of redwood . The wood comes from an old barn, so the wood is dry and well seasoned. Could you please comment on the pros and cons of carving this wood. Many of our carvers have just started carving and I wonder what kind of problems we will be facing. Since the wood is free and the majority of the members are retired and on a fixed budget, I'm sure they will want to jump at the chance.
Thank you again for all of your good assistance and help.
Bob Muller
