I have no trouble with the foreground and the back ground but the mid-foreground and the mid-background or the multiple levels inbetween cause me problems.

  Hi Patti,
Just follow Susan's example, it is not as difficult as it sounds if you study what she is saying. When I started carving the first thing I did was go to Susan's site and follow her tutorial for carving the barn and silo. That was the very first carving I did, and by following her instructions I certainly learned a lot. Susan has many fine lessons on her site that you would do well to follow, then just branch out into your own carvings following her lesson plans to complete them. They are the best around for newbies on the learning curve. I also bought some of her patterns which are excellent, so good in fact my buddy Jim bought the lot while he was learning. Sorry to praise Susan so much, but I think she really deserves it. Check out her site at www.carvingpatterns.com you will not regret it.
  Take care,
  Clive.
Oh, Greg Wilkerson has some great ideas and lessons on his site also, check them out you will learn a lot.
