Hi Mike,
Turning is certainly much faster than carving and pen turning is a great way to use those left over pieces of material. How do you carve on a turned pen? There is only about .030 inches of material to work with. I would like to see pictures of that. We have a local shop that will burn names, designs etc. on pens with his CNC laser. The effect is great on light colored wood. Surprizingly he says that it is better to apply the finish before he burns them.

You are so right. I started turning last year, and since the results are faster than carving, the satisfaction acheived makes it hard to get back to carving.
Lately I've been turning pens, and to include carving, I have one pen on which I have carved a spirit face almost done. Need to highlight the hair with woodburning, sand, seal and press in the pen parts.
