this is what I was looking for.
It is well seasoned as it is a dead tree & has been for a while.
About 10 to 12'' thick.

I know it gets real hard when dead.
Sassafras is a bit brittle when dry and has an open grain. The color is wonderful for faces. The strength it has makes it great for carvings with open space. I have a couple of large pieces on my web site out of sassafras.
