  Hi Mike and Patty;

      Sassafras carves quite well when seasoned...a little brittle, but easy with a sharp edge....It is a good exterior wood as it has natural resistance to rot and bugs ( the volatile oils...it's related to cinnamon ). It isn't particularly strong and is quite light-weight, but I use it regularly as a substitute for white oak ( which is a killer to carve, especially if it's kiln dried ). It is used to make canoe paddles, so it can't be too weak. We also are using it in our furniture and cabinetry quite a bit. Sassafras has a similar grain appearance and finish to oak. It stains a bit to the silver-gray from most white oak, but can readily be matched. On my new website, which should go up sometime next week if all goes well, there is a shell sort of thing with flowers to each side on my "possibilities" page: The wood is sassafras and there's alot of it in a 20,000 square foot villa in Palm Beach, Florida....I carved eight of the surmounts and 21 shells and drops for a French Provincial sitting room.

  Hope this helps;

  God bless,

  Stephan

    I have carved walking sticks from sasafrass before (green)
    I liked it I have a dead tree next to me will it be good for carving?
    I think it will but what will it be best for.
    I know it gets real hard when dead.

      Understand that I'm not trying to make anyone jealous or anything but I just opened my mailbox and there was issue #5 of carving magazine. I will spend my weekend checking it out. Maura in NYC
