Have had a couple of close ups with your bear there & you are so correct they showed up very dark but I know enough that they are a blended color.

Mike's suggestions are quite excellent and I wanted to pick up and emphasis
one of his points. The black bear is not black. In fact what we call the
black bear is only a color variation of the brown bear species.
It's fur is an extremely deep shade of brown both in nature and in painting.
Because of the dramatic contrast between his fur and his surroundings it
only appears as a black in photographs.

Bears are sort of close to me. I had a pet for 6 years at his largest when he was 12-14 years he weighed around 650 lbs. Their fur is coarse like a horses mane. The ones here in the Smokys are dark its hard to distinguish a brown tint to them here even up close. In the sun light some shine a blue/black. 10% of the cubs here have a white chest making the dark fur "look" even blacker. I use Rite Dye diluted with 70% alcohol for colors. The shoulders and places where the sun hits bleaches the fur. The hardest obstacle for me a bear is fat and getting the muscle carved is so subtle. Its almost like carving a pig. Just a note bears weigh only 6 oz when born.
