[Woodcarver] Grizzley bear paint

Bo:

The last realistic bear that I did was first burned with a hot wood burning
tool to bring the fur out. I left the wood burning dark and then painted it
with different shades of acrylic brown washes. This let the burning show
through and provided the bear with good texture and dark shading. I mixed
acrylic paint very thin, probably three or four drops of paint in the bubble
of one of those round plastic paint trays if I remember correctly. I do
remember it was very thin, requiring several different washes. Also, I used
several different shades of browns in the washes.

The best advice I can give is to get some good color pictures of real bears
and study them often during your painting.

I'm in the process of burning a black bear right now. I should be painting
him in a week or two if I can get him done.

Hope this helps you out.
