I use the same traditional chisels for relief carving and in the round. The
type of tools you need depends on if you are using power carving or
traditional chisel carving and somewhat on the size you'll be doing. I use a
little power but I much prefer the traditional chisels. If you want to use
the traditional chisels I would begin with something like an 8-piece
standard size beginner set. Stubai, Swiss, 2-Cherry, Lamp, Henry Taylor and
such are good brand names. I purposely left off Flex Cut, which is also an
excellent tool I'm told, because I don't own any. Many carvers love the Flex
Cut brand and I can't remember hearing anything negative about them.

The next step is to learn to sharpen these to a razor sharp edge.
