Hi Jean,
Laundry bleach should kill the mold without bleaching out the wood. Just
wash it in laundry bleach and dry it. Seal the ends and let it cure
naturally.
The pear wood is good if carved in pairs. Joking aside, pear wood is good
for carving but hard. It has a great grain structure.
