Hi Wilson,
Sycamore is a good wood for carving. I looks something like oak. It is
medium to soft. A little softer than black walnut. and slightly harder than
butternut. It has a fantastic fleck. If you make a cut directly toward the
heart (quartersawn) the fleck is like fire-flames, very beautiful. It is a
porous wood so a filler is recommended in the finishing operation. You have
a wonderful piece of wood.

BlankGood Morning to everyone! I've been given a fairly large piece of
Sycamore. It appears to be fairly hard and parts of it are very salted.
Does anyone have experience carving Sycamore? How does it finish? Any
inherent problems with the wood? I like the coloring it has, and am looking
for a way to use it. Thanks for your thoughts.
Wilson in Vista
