I noticed the "ornamental pear" in the original post and I admit I
don't know what that is.  We have a tree called a Bradford Pear which
bears no fruit and I don't THINK it is even a fruit tree.  It is
almost completely covered with small white blooms in the early spring.
If this is what you are talking about, the color of the wood is about
that of Apple or Pear  and is very hard.  It has a tendency to crack
when it dries and sealing the ends has only limited benefits.
