There is only one bolt/wingnut on the long end of the L, to clamp that end
together and grip the scraper in the wood. The other end of the L was not cut to
begin with.

extend the blade only as you need it, that reduces vibration of the blade.

An old spackling knife is perfect, just like you and Joe suggested. I have
carved cove moldings, and rope moldings, not sure what kind of edge you are
looking for and whether it could be carved in only 1/4" of depth.
