Have made a number of scratch stocks from a carpenter saw blade. I
generally use a grinding wheel and files to get it to shape. Bevel the edge at a
45 degree angle or thereabouts with a file. It will scrape better with an
angled edge. Bought an old handsaw at flee market for about $2. and still have
about 80% of it left.
Have used scratch stocks to shape dining table edges, shoe
moulding, window seat edges, etc. First get the shape of the edge as close as you
can with a plane, carving chisels, gouges, carpenter's chisel, rasp or any tool
that will work. After getting the edge as close to what you want as possible,
use the scratch stock to complete it by rubbing it back and forth on the edge
to be shaped.
I begin by making a pattern from posterboard and attach that to the
saw blade with double sided tape and then grind and file the metal to shape.
Haven't ever tried to temper, etc. just use it as it is.
       Good luck,
       Tom
