Mike & Patty,
A better choice would be a 12 piece set of Pfeil carving tools being offered
brand new from KMS tools in Canada. They are a first rate supplier, and they
are at a buy-it-now price of $249.99. Lee Valley also has a 12 piece set of
Henry Taylor tools for about $250.00 brand new. For my money, Stubai is
hands down the premier choice in carving tools. Great tools, and fantastic
people behind their distribution at Stubai Direct. The 8 piece relief
carving set from Stubai is another good place to start at $229.99.
Ebay can be a very strange place to buy carving tools sometimes. There is a
34 piece set of pfeil tools on auction right now. There are 12 flat gouges,
and 22 spoons. Makes no sense to me, but there are almost 8 days left in the
auction, and the bid is $511.32 already. Another nice set of 30 pfeil tools
has just less than 2 days left, and the bid is at $920.00. And the reserve
price is still not met.
Rockler has the beginner set of Flexcut mallet tools on clearance for
$99.00. Much of you buying decision should be driven by what kind of carving
you want to do. If you want to do relief carving, then the full size tools
are the only way to go. If caricature type carving is your interest, then
the Flexcut and Ramelson are the most popular. I also own a set of the 1/2"
Denny Gouges, and they are of the finest quality.
I have heard many times people have said that Ashley Iles tools are a softer
steel, and not of the same quality as some of the brand listed earlier. I
owned a few of their tools at one time, and had no problems with them.
If you are really bent towards pfeil tools, you can save a decent amount of
money by buying from one of the Canadian suppliers. The exchange rate is not
as good as a year ago, but every little bit helps.
Good Luck, and be careful on Ebay.
Daniel Heine

How many pieces are in the set
They are suppose to be a good brand
Might want to check the catologs of
Woodcraft, Woodcraftshop, Smokey mountain, Chipping away,
just a few of the companies that have both printed and online catalogs for
the price of new tools
Stubi, Pfeil, taylor, swiss made, flexcut, ramelson are all good brands
too and might be able to purchase a new set for that price.
Have to be careful on ebay, sometimes the price gets to be as much as new
items
Thanks
