I was just at a seminar learning how to build my own log home from scratch.
We learned that the ideal wood to get is "winter-cut" (unless you are
getting standing dead logs etc which is not the subject of this discussion).
During the winter, the sap is "down", and logs cut during autumn & winter
give you the least amount of shrinkage, checking, etc. and causes the least
amount of problems in your log home.

Not an expert by any means, but I'd suspect your log was cut during a period
when the sap is running. I'd be tempted to let it settle more until after
the fall, and hopefully a cut tree's sap will go "down" as well, leaving you
much cleaner tools to work with.,

You're lucky you have such a nice length log to work with. I had a tree cut
late winter and had requested they leave a 5 foot length stump also for
carving. They arrived on site much earler than planned and had already cut
the tree down. I have about a 2 foot stump, plus a 5 foot log they cut just
above the stump! Oh well, they did show me how to use my chain saw properly
and how to feed a chipper correctly ;-)
