I went to high school on the Crow Indian reservation in South Central MT. my classmates either did a three strand braid or a loose pony tail. wouldn't a two strand twist unwind? anyhow, not sure if it was authentic old school as so many traditions were discarded over the years but many were retained and that is what I saw in my world. good luck.
