[Woodcarver] Carving featured in Fine Homebuilding magazine

I had several (9) Vietnamese employees at one time and I can't say that they
showed me much about traditional Vietnamese carving, but they were all from
multi-generation furniture making families and all showed a very strong
French influence ( not surprising), Both in the execution and building. Of
course they were carving and building what they were assigned to, but
usually someone's personal tendencies bleed over into the job. I never got
to correct one of them.Their craftsmanship was impeccable.
They worked on the shop after hours and built a huge alter for their church.
I thought that would be an opportunity to see some of their own design. It
was gorgeous, but not a bit of ornament on it. It tended more toward deco
than any other design. They were with me for a few years and it was a
privilege getting to work with them. ( and a real education about a lot of
other things too!) I have always regretted not getting them to open up more
about their native woodworking practices.
It was all work and deadlines then. There is time to take a deep breath
now.
I will check out the Barnes and Noble suggestion and see what I can find.
Take care, Phill
