I would use the table saw to take off 1/8 or 1/16 inch.
This should get you to clean wood and should remove the finish and grit. Then you can use the plainer to take off the table saw marks

Yikes, Sam! Goes to show you how green I really am!
Don't want to ruin my new planer and jointer blades,
even though I'm excited about getting this "free"
hardwood. I can round up a metal detector for nails in
the maple flooring and have the table saw to cut off
the grooves, but gee. Based on Sam's response (and
thanks so much for it, Sam) would you folks tackle the
grit and gummy finish if you were given, say, ten
planks of this flooring, or would you pass? The maple
is probably lovely, but is it worth the planer/jointer
wear and tear?
