Hi Sally,

Rick Butz has a pattern for the Adirondack Hermit in his carving book.  
I think
it is his volume "How to carve wood".  See here:

Don't know that Rick gave him a name, but he may have.  Nor do I know 
if this is
a historical figure or a whimsical one.
