I just finished a 12" angel blowing a trumpet from a pattern by a book from our fearless leader Bill Judt. It probably should have taken a couple of weeks by the rate I carve, but it actually took months, because I'm slow and don't know what I'm doing, even though I've been carving for over 20 years <grin>.
A problem I had was how to finish it. I can paint a flat piece of wood white, which is about all of my painting ability. Since basswood was used I couldn't stain it and didn't want to use Bill Judt's recommended SSW method, so I sprayed it with Krylon clear satin finish and applied a wash of burnt ubmer oil paint mixed with boiled lindseed oil. Most important, I'm pleased with the result. I must have disposed of the oily rags properly because the house didn't burn down.
Carvin' is therapeutic,
