Linseed oil is not bad. You might consider marine spar varnish also. Be careful to make sure you project is very dry before finishing so that the finish will penetrate as deep as possible. Thin the first coat or two to further insure penetration. Make sure the customer knows to keep an eye on it and do touch-up work at the first sign that the finish has been penetrated. Water that enters through a very small scratch ( birds etc.) will spread through capillary action and not be allowed to dry out by the very finish that protects the piece. This small dark spot will rot quickly.
If you are comfortable working with it, the modern epoxies art an excellent finish also, just make sure they include UV protection.
