Ive read most of the posts....smiled at a few (High Princess of Santas....hehe)....and am bewildered by some who have benefited from purchases by those who have the distinction of MASTER CARVER.....maybe those who have registered their opinion (tho I fear have not taken the time to research what it takes to become a Master Carver) could use the following and possibly revise their thinking.
We in the Northwest have and organization initiated by the late Roy Colberg, of the Quilseda Carvers, the PACIFIC NORTHWEST COUNCIL ( of Judges).....he wrote many articles concerning the overall Judging institution, and how it needed a standard to follow, which should be adapted from coast to coast......In the Rules and Regulations concerning SKILL LEVELS, we have the following excerpt........
EXPERT.....for carvers that have won 3 BEST OF DIVISION awards, one each on a different carving, with one BEST OF DIVISION having been won at each of TWO DIFFERENT SHOWS in Advanced. This skill level will require a HIGH DEGREE of ARTISTIC PRESENTATION AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. If the show does not offer Expert level, an Expert carver may enter Advanced.
MASTERS.....Achieving the milestone of 4 out of 5 sections and one blue ribbon at the expert level within each, will qualify an Expert Carver for the HONORED DISTINCTION OF MASTER CARVER. a Master Carver is NOT a level of competition, but rather a TITLE OF DISTINCTION that reflects the accomplishment required to achieve this stature. A Master Carver shall always compete at the Expert level.
..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
IN OTHER WORDS......the Master Carver is awarded the distinction as JUDGED BY HIS PEERS....he is not only an ARTISAN being able to design a creation for artistic rendering......he is also exhibits CRAFTSMANSHIP in not only knowing the woods he wishes to use, but also the tools by which to execute his product, and all the necessary intelligence in finishing his (or her) woodworking achievement. Any one of us can achieve this level IF we take the time and energy it requires.
I do hope that with all the words that have passed to this time, our Woodcarvers, from Junior to Expert, have a better knowledge of the Honor of MASTER CARVER.
