Lurker here-since 97...
I make my strops for students. I hand pick the leather based on flatness and
smoothness of texture on the glazed side.
I rubber cement the strips to carefully flattened maple then gently sand the
glaze off the surface to make a very smooth suede like surface. I have not
used diamond powder but Aluminum. This I sprinkled on the sueded surface and
rub it in, without a medium, with my fingers.
It seems to me, with such a fine powder, a medium would give the powder
something to sink into no matter how thinly it is applied.
The way I used these strops, they needed recharging with the powder when the
honing is no longer satisfactory. Overkill maybe but they work quite well.
Unfortunately for me, I haven't been able to follow the list conversations
well but this caught my attention for some reason. I hope this gives some
new ideas.
BTW, I was lucky enough to be able to go to the warehouse of the leather
producer, hand pick the hide and show them what part of it I wanted. They
were wonderfully co-operative.
Chips to all,
