Hello Friends in Wood -

As many of your know, in addition to Joe's and Dennis's efforts on
Marnie's behalf, a number of the students in Marv Kaisersatt's May
class at Ivan Whillock's studio agreed to carve friendship cane
segments as part of the fund raising for Marnie. The members of the
class have been joined by other carvers to support the effort.

Segments are starting to come in, so it seems time to update you all
on the status of the Michigan cane!

Class member Jim Dupont sent the first segment to arrive. Jim did a
nifty figure shinnying up the dowel that runs in the center of the
cane. Segments from other class members are schedule to arrive by
mid-July.

A week ago Friday at the Roundup in Evart I received a female head
segment from "Ol' Don" Burgdorf and a chip carved egg segment from
Terry Zobl, an excellent chip carver from the Metro Club here in
Michigan.

At the PO today I picked up up a box from Jim O'Harra (Grove City,
OH), whom I had the good fortune to finally meet at the CCA
competition last fall. Jim came up with a new wrinkle for
friendship canes; three separate segments, which when stacked
together in the correct order make up a figure. Jim carved an Uncle
Sam based upon a new Marv Kaisersatt pattern.. Jim did a great job
on the figure, which you have to see to really appreciate. (I'll
post photos once I figure out where I carefully mislaid the cable for
my camera.)

So that's five segments in hand with more on the way. Thanks to Jim
Dupont, Ol' Don, Terry and Jim O'Harra for their contributions.
Updates as more segments arrive and photos are available.

Carve On!

Matt
