I think that what they are refuring to is 'The Golden Mean' or 'The Divine
Proportion', or 'The
Golden Rule' which are all names for the same thing, This is a numerical
relationship between
the length-to-width of an object/picture/carving. I follow the "KISS"
principle and remember it
as 5-to-8. This means that an object 5" by 8" is more pleasing than one that
is 4" by 10" and
also establishes a relationship between parts of the same object. You can
can get much more
(more than you really want) by running a search on any of the above. The
relationship is shown
to exist in most of nature.
This was introduced, to me, in High School Art for composing an art object.
The other thing
I remember is that in a picture the vierer, subconsciously, scans from the
lower right upwards
to the upper left. I have never heard of this since & wonder if this is a
valid principle or a
figment of my art teacher's imagination.
