Hi Sally,

Phi is the number 1.618 is the Golden Section/Golden Ratio. More information
can be gotten at

It is a unique number whose ratio makes a pleasing design. There are other
numbers like the Pleasing Proportion, that an 8 ½ X 11-inch piece of paper
is based on which is 1.294, that are also interesting to use as design
guides.

The Greek letter Pi (Pie) is .314 which is what a circle is based on.
