FWIW
In my 'neck of the woods' there are contractors that specialize in clearing
land for development.
They sell the softwoods (& some hardwood) to sawmills or pulpmills. Larger
sized hardwoods go to
speciality mills that deal with these sizes. The remainding hardwoods are
bought by those who specialize in the cutting/splitting of firewood. The
firewood is "mixed hardwoods" which usually
consists of Beech, Birch, Cherry, Red Oak, Hickory. The firewood buyer
determines the length & the quarters range up to 10 inches across. Depending
upon your imagination, that's a lot of carving
space. I get about 4 cords per year & can usually cull-out enough acceptable
carving stock to last
the year. I have some of it shown on my PT album.
(Locally no one wants Basswood for burning (firewood) & the sawmills don't
want it for milling.
It is usually bulldozed into the ground at the site)

Over the years I have interupted the above sequence & got some larger pieces
at little (or no)
cost... BUT you have to be there at the right time & with the right
equipment.
