Jan and Jack, I thought I'd spill over into a new thread New folks to
the list may have some input to this subject that surfaces from time to
time. It's interesting to learn peoples opinions from the various
geographic regions.
For David and I, woodcarving shows are not money makers as far as
finished carved items are concerned. If you have knives, gadgets,
books or things related to woodcarving, I think the attendees like to
purchase something. It seems that carvers always want one more knife.
Chip carvers need one more lay-out tool, etc.
We find that our finished items sell well at "juried" art shows...not a
craft show. If you want to sell some of your inventory, try a juried
art show or juried art fair. You will be exhibiting with all sorts of
people. There will be oil or water paintings, flower essences,
gourds, paper products, soap makers......The point is that people
attending that type of show have money to spend on the more unusual
items. They enjoy giving the unusual gifts to their families and
friends. They are the type that shop museum gift shops etc. They are
willing to spend more money for a quality item. Craft shows are
looking for "deals."
With that said, you will not have your carving pals to talk wood
performance, techniques, etc. You might be talking to people that
haven't given much thought to wood vs. plastic but they are interested.
So you have to exhibit at those shows with that in mind. It's a great
opportunity for educating the general public.
I'll jump down now...someone else can jump up.

Hi Woodbutcher. Wanted to let Listers know about the show in
Lancaster.
PA last weekend. It was an excellent show from my point of view- a lot
of terrific carvings, especially in the advanced category. I was
fortunate enough to receive a second place award in Advanced for my
least
sandpiper and a third for my Santa Spool jewelry.
+++++++++++++
Thank for the report Jack
And congratulations on your ribbons
Glad to hear a good time was had by all
We NEVER have much luck in selling at the shows here
Don't even try over here
