It's been my experence that pine is a good starter wood and cheap too, you 
can also try some of the different mediums on small blocks like stains and waxes 
along with paints and sealers. (better than basswood)but but don't forget to 
try the wood Old Joe mentioned  first it will be more fun. cedar is really 
pretty also.
