Stephan.. if you do the computer fan method.. which is excellent.. look at
the fans closely.. they have different RPM's, voltage inputs.. some AC some
DC.. I'd shoot for the same make of you can find them.. and go for AC if
possible.

Other fans.. I'd guess you could salvage some stove vent fans.. not the
squirrel cage type.. They sound noisy over a stove but may be quieter in a
wooden box with a filter. You could build a ply box just 1/2 the size of a
standard filter (that seems what they do with the Razaire.. and wrap the cut
edge with cardboard.. put a piece of hardware cloth behind the opening of
the fan.. and the filter in front.. if you make a plexiglas 'tunnel' at the
front of the dust collector, it focuses the air flow from your work area to
the filter.

I looked at Lynn's box and it looks great.. I think I've seen another and
will see if I can find the plans somewhere. Nope, could not find it in my
links, it might be buried somewhere.. but, I'll not likely find it.. sorry..

Another good choice is the one sold at Woodcraft.. not Big Dog.. but he may
sell them also.. moves 500 cfm and is half the price of the Razaire.. In
some respects it is a bit better for home use because it has a larger front
surface on it.. similar to Lynn Diel's box..

Finally, if you go to http://tinyurl.com/34x2l you will be going to the shop
eqpt page of a bird carver who has an online store. Vic has this unit for
less than you can pick it up elsewhere.. only $10 more than the Woodcraft
version and it is much more powerful.. I've seen this one in operation at
carving events and it is very efficient.
