  Mike,
You basically split the wood blank lengthwise and carve or router channels with a semicircular cross section through each half. Then, when you glue the two halves back together... Tadda! You have a long square stick with a circular hole through it. I know there are some out there that rifle drill them from one end on a lathe, but that's a bit trickier and out of my range of tools.

The wood I pulled this flute out of was a nice piece I was able to hand pick from Lakeshore Hardwoods (near Pulaski, NY). With careful cutting it yielded about 6 flute blanks with a bit left over for knife handles. Believe it or not... that western red cedar they sell for the pricier decks makes a good flute and is easy to get a hold of in "2x" dimensions. It's expensive if you're going to build a deck from it, but a single 4x6 piece is enough for 8+ flutes. Heck, if you know a contractor that builds decks, all it takes is one 20-24" cut-off, and you're on your way.

  Keep on Carvin'

Nice --you make me want to do a flute
I guess that's about the best complement we can get.
How do you get the hole through the wood to make it?
Migraine has hit so having trouble.
God bless & protect our people in uniform & help the countries they are in.
