Hi Harvey,

The Internet is a wonderful place to look for pictures. I went to my search
engine and typed in African Elephant photo, and it gave me a whole bunch of
links including this one.
http://www.thebigzoo.com/Store/Posters/African_Elephant.asp

For the chess set is there any theme you what? If not I would suggest you
borrow a chess set from someone, or perhaps you have one, to copy.

I'm not sure if you're asking a question on gluing up the 24 by 30-inch
block for the elephant. Gluing up a full block of 24 X 30 could waste lots
of wood depending on the pose you want. I would determine the pose and
create a pattern before gluing up the block. Than I would plan the material
for the minimum amount of waist so when you cut the wood, before gluing, it
would resemble almost a roughout. That will save lots of roughing time and
save material costs. There is no point in gluing up the whole block as wide
as the ears so I would glue it as wide as the body and glue on smaller
blocks for the ears. I would do the same for the trunk and perhaps even the
legs. I would choose the grain to run vertical through the piece. I would
use good wood glue like Tite Bond 2.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
