[Woodcarver] Wood choice

I have been doing a bit of reading regarding woods suitable for carving. I read one piece where the author used Boxelder and had good success with it. His only caution was to keep the finished carving out of direct sunlight or it would bleach out. I happen to have access to standing Boxelder trees in our timber and thought it might make wonderful carvings from its rich and varied colors. Does anyone have any experience with Boxelder? Would it be an acceptable wood for a beginning carver?

Thanks
