[Woodcarver] Spalted wood - Now you have me worried!

Never gave any thought to spalted wood being a hazard. I bought a large quantity of 'dunage wood' which was sitting in a lumber yard just weathering away. Got a good price on the stuff considering its condition. This wood was heavily spalted from the exposure outdoors. Now I have this wood in a outdoor frame semi-covered with a tarp been that way for at least 7-8 years.

When I work with the spalted wood I make a point of planning it outside when ever possible. Once the wood has been planed and is clear of the crust or crud that had grown I have been treating the wood like any other wood I use. Now after all these years why do I feel the hair rising on the back of my neck?

Is there any medical evidence to support or disown potential dangers of handling spalted wood? Feed back would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
