Sylda,
"Spalted" wood refers to wood that has been colored by an infestation
(typically a mold) during it's growth or, sometimes, through improper
seasoning. Spalted maple is sometimes referred to as ambrosia maple.
Sometimes the wood is seasoned "improperly" on purpose for the effect.
There is no way that the warnings given already should be ignored, but the
general consensus seems to be that these woods are not worth the risk.
Braving ridicule and loss of credibility here <G>, I'm going on record as
believing they are worth the risk and I actually prefer the spalted versions
of maple and box elder (espescially curly/spalted maple). But I also take
very seriously the precautions they required, especially when turning or
sanding.

Keep on Carvin'
