Hi, Bill,

Thanks for your vote of confidence :)    I, too, believe that being able to 
draw is a big help in carving.  Drawings don't have to be great 
artwork.  They just have to be understandable to you so they can clarify 
your ideas and help to work out the details of the carving.  No doubt I'll 
vary the carving somewhat from the drawing, depending on the wood and 
changes that I think will make for a better finished carving.

I was going to respond to you privately, but thought we might start another 
thread here :) It really is great, and IMHO important, to challenge 
yourself.  Money is definitely an incentive, but there is an indescribable 
satisfaction in successfully completing something  totally new.  I really 
love Santas, but find that I need to break out of the Santa thing every so 
often.  Without commissions, I doubt that would happen.  Challenge is a 
motivator for me. I think it would be interesting to see what other people 
find motivating.
