This question, at Vic's excellent advice, has had me on the phone to my
Extension Agent. As I sat, on hold, waiting, my beloved hubby has been
in the background reading me your responses which have been so hilarious
that I was afraid that if the Extension Agent ever picked up the line I
would only be able to laugh at them!
I did consider all the :) excellent :) ideas offered. So, No, Gordon, I
don't think it had anything to do with our trees "bearing" buts, to
quote you. The problem was that they aren't bearing NUTS, their buts
are still nicely clothed in bark! No naked trees here.
And, David, I didn't at the time consider a late frost or killing
freeze. However, having had a chance to think about it my other trees
all bloomed and fruited ... Cherries, pear, and sassafras. So I don't
think it was that.
And, Jan, just in case you might have been onto something I am buying
one huge squirrel trap tonight to protect my family.
Well, the Extension Agent did finally pick up the line and the answer is
.... Drum roll please ... 17 Year Cicada! My guess was rightest of all
the ideas you guys suggested! Apparently the damage to the tree
branches by the cicada did indeed destroy the nut crop when the new
growth died. She also told me that Maryland's Apple Orchards are
suffering from the same cause, apples are a major crop for us.
Now, Clive, to tell you the BARE truth I didn't ask her if our local
Department of Nut Fairies suffered a RIFF (Reduction in Force) this year
because of budget restrains. I was too em-bare-essed to do so.
Thanks everyone, Susan

It's all down to the government Susan, with the cut backs, and the
increased
cost of fuel, the nut fairy cannot travel as extensively as she once
did,
and so some areas have to remain nutless I'm afraid.
Oh well, maybe she will get to you next year.
Nuts in Canada.
Clive.
