[Woodcarver] Looking for stick carving vise ideas.

Hello everyone. I am an on again off again (mostly off) beginner carver. I 
am mostly interested in carving wood spirit hiking staves and small wood 
spirits for decoration of home & garden.

I think I remember someone on this list mentioning that one of the magazines 
recently had an article or plan for a stick carving vise. Can anyone point 
me to this? Any ideas for the least awkward and most flexible stick carving 
vise?  Trying to hold the stick by sitting on it forces you to carve hunched 
up (ooh my back), and trying to hold it with my legs at an angle is just as 
awkward. I definitly need a holding device of some sort. Perhaps a shaving 
horse type of contraption? Any ideas?
