Harry if you take the measurment from your writ to the ground when hands 
are by your side you have the correct length.
If he needs it for support then the "T" handle style is the best. The old 
style hooked handle only gives balance.
You can always leave it a little long and adjust once you have presented it 
by triming the length.
If he has a large hand don't make the handle too thin. It should be thick 
enough so that the fingers don't over lap when holding.
The thickness is governed by the strength of the timber used.
