[Woodcarver] carving a deer antler

Hi Patricia,

I, too, wish to chime into this conversation. I have not carved an
antler before but have used them as cane handles with the branches of
the antlers as the thumb rest ... Which has little or nothing to do with
my wanting to comment :)

Here in the State of Maryland we have laws that restrict the sales of
deer antlers plus several other 'bi-products' of wild animals. Maryland
law does allow the licensed hunter to give another person a pair of
antlers but not sell those antlers. In fact you can't sell or buy
antlers in any form no matter even if you purchased them through a deer
farm from another state. So when we are gifted with a set those canes we
keep for ourselves.

Although I have often wished to try scrimshaw carving and I have seen
some wonderful moose antlers wood burned plus as a basket weaver I would
really like to do an antler potato basket or two we can't legally obtain
the antlers. So this is simply a note that if you do chose to sell your
carving you might want to check your state laws first. I think that
each state has it's own provisions.

Hi everyone!

I was recently given a deer antler to carve into a weasel. I have never
carved an antler before, so I was wondering if anyone may have any
advice or
tips for me, or if there's anything I should know about carving antler?
I'm
really new to carving to begin with, and I deal mainly with relief
carving,
or carving into eggshells. thanks a bunch!
