I have had some problems with hands cramping or becoming stiff and sore. I have built up the handles on the knives I use most often. I even took a golf grip and cut it to the length that I needed and then slipped it on the knife handle. You may use "Vet Wrap" to build up your knife handles.

Hi Harry,
have been told it is related to how hard you grip the knives. flex fingers between cuts more frequently. That's about all I know, talked to my doctor a long time ago and he said not much to do for it - no special salves or other junk. It is all related to the amount of blood circulating in your hand. Sorry not more help.
Be well.

hi everyone,
i need some advise concerning something that always happens without exception each time i carve.
each time i carve with a knife for a certain time my hand blocks completely for a few seconds its like if my fingers are totally stuck in the holding the knife position for a few moments. stretching helps and after a break of a few minutes i am fine again. i do many different things with my hands and this never happens except for when i carve with a knife. (there is no pain involved just this weird feeling like if your fingers don't listen to you)
has anyone had this happen to them before to ,or is it normal?
the other thing is when i carved a caricature or small carving i sometimes want to paint it .
now making a painting is easy i know how to do it but somehow painting that carving makes me completely want to rethink how i should paint.
the caving looks good but when i paint it i completely mess it up and don't seem to get the details right. for excample the eyes are the hardest to do, i can't get the detail i want and always have to redo it to get right several times, staying within the lines is ok but sometimes i feel like i just can't get any straight line going.
is there any tutorials on painting a carving properly, what pensils and paints are best to use?
can you tell me how you usually do your carvings painting? do you pay any special attention to certain things first? etc...?
