Maricha, I marble painted a turned wooden lamp a few years ago. It is
basically a green marble, and it must be ok since folks I have told it
is wood do not believe it. Maybe they are just being kind, but I think
it looks pretty good.
I bought a faux finish kit from a craft store, but as I recall, there
was a base coat, which was solid, and then there were two other colours
that were added by dipping a sea sponge in the paint and dabbing first
one, and then the second colour, and then followed up with a creamy
white applied with a feather to get the effect of graining, and finally
a high gloss clear finish as the final step.
Actually, before sending this message, I was actually was able to find
the instruction sheet that went with the package. If you want, I could
scan it and send it directly to you if you like. This process certainly
doesn't sound as 'interesting' as Susan's approach, but it worked for me.
