bill, the vinegar and fine steel wool is quite effective.
it is a lot of fun trying it as well on different timbers. the lighter
timbers, take more work, more vinegar and steel wool, by putting two coats
the acid seems to go darker. but of course it depends on the absorption of
the timber, the colour of the timber, and deeply ebonized you want to do it.
if you are doing a two tone bit,,,, that is natural wood and parts ebonized,
you need to seal the parts that you want to look natural and that the
ebonizing liquid does not bleed into it. by sealing with wood sealer, or
varnish the areas you want to look natural timber colour, and the rest
unsealed to allow the timber to soak in the ebonizing liquid. takes a bit
more work but is effective.
hope it helps a bit bill,
cheers
