Gosh I never knew that! And my goodness I actually own three of
them...have always called them carpenter/woodworking/carving vises!
Wonder, are all types of vises in England called chops? If so then I
have a couple more for metalworking!
Like torch vs flashlight, lift vs elevator, bonnet vs car hood...that
type of thing!

Not Steve but you could take a look at this site and see what
"Carvers/English 'Chops" are.
Just a fancy name for a carvers vise or holding device.(G)
