The duality of language is not only seen in terms such as violin-fiddle, carving-whittling but in names of persons and names of businesses, reflecting on the formality or informality of the situation:
The formal Robert informally becomes Bob, Richard is Dick, Margaret becomes Peggy, Delores is Dee, Norman is shortened to Norm, etc. When your mother wanted you to take her seriously, chances are she shifted into the formal version of your name, "Robert, come here!" People often use the formal version of their names professionally but the informal version of their names among their friends.
Names of businesses, too, reflect that duality. The formal First National Bank sounds serious, as the owners intend it to sound. The informal Bob's Barbershop sounds casual. Would Bob's Bank sound a little too casual or First National Barbershop sound a little stuffy?
Now I'd better get back to whittling the Stations of the Cross:)
