STEVE....LIKE I TOLD CYNDA....ONLY CHIP CARVE ON VERTICAL GRAIN BUTTERNUT...OTHERWISE YOU WILL FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO ACCOMPLISH....IVE DONE SEVERAL DESK PIECES WITH INSERT CLOCKS THAT LOOK GOOD......I HAVE TRIED CHIP CARVING ON HORIZONTAL GRAIN AND IT DOES NOT TAKE....HOPE THIS HELPS

Is there a good reliable place to order butternut from that would ship to Alaska?   
I have always wanted to try chip carving some.  How is it for chip carving?
