Hey Bob,

The puzzle you're talking about isn't normally carved.

The "E" is cut out of basswood and steamed or boiled and then bent, drilled, and the Tee or nail inserted while still wet and hot, then it's bent back to normal and allowed to dry and cool.  Once dry it can be sanded smooth to get rid of all the raised grain and it becomes a permenant "Impossible Object"
