OK, pretty much sticking my mouth where it has no business being but....

Let the people interested in the carvings vote. At the "door" sell (cheap) a
bunch of tickets, one for each "class" of carvings and a best of show.
Display
all carvings grouped by class with a place by each individual piece to
deposit
the ticket for that particular "class". Judging lasts for x long. Whoever is
interested gets to pay for the privilege and vote for A piece in each class
plus
the best of show. At the end of the time frame for judging, count up the
tickets
each piece gets. Winner is easy. Each winning piece can't be entered at the
level at which it's won again. It can go up a level, or more. Have
"calibers" of
competitions where the EXPECTED level of competition gets better. Winner of
a level at a stage 1 competition may enter at a stage 2+ competition at the
same level. When a piece wins best of show at the top level competition it's
automatically retired. Till then it has to increase the level of it's
competitors
after each win.

rank beginner (actually even before that <g>)
