Cane Segments are blocks of 2 x 2 x 3 basswood with a 5/8 inch bored hole down the 3 inch length.....each member gets one of these blocks and carves what ever he wants on it.....even wood burning and chip carving.....then they are gathered in sets of 10 to16 and placed onto a 5/8 inch dowel then capped off with a turned piece or another carving with a 5/8 inch blind hole....and finished off with a bottom tip that is generally turned....with 16 piece canes they usually have a hand hold placed at about 36 inches from the floor......Tom Wolfe has a great publication about cane segment carving......they are not glued onto the rod.....hope this helps
